In Namibia, Hugo found inspiration and mentorship from renowned German professionals like H. Diener, Adolf Jentz, and Anfried Blatt. Their guidance shaped his artistic journey, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavours.
Upon moving to Cape Town in 1979, Hugo continued to enrich his skills with part-time tutelage from local artists like A. Coetser, Johan Coetzee, and Don Benzien. Each brushstroke and lesson brought him closer to realising his artistic vision.
Although art remained a cherished hobby for years, it wasn't until his retirement that Hugo decided to fully immerse himself in painting. Now, residing in Saldana Bay, he has finally transformed his lifelong dream into reality.
Today, Hugo paints with passion and purpose, capturing the beauty of his surroundings and expressing himself through vibrant colours and intricate strokes. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the fulfilment found in pursuing one's true calling.
Join us in celebrating Hugo's artistic journey and the remarkable talent that continues to enrich our lives.
As I look back on my artistic journey, I realise that it all began with clay. Since 1975, pottery has been my first love. Whether it was wheelwork, handwork, or mold making, I immersed myself in learning every aspect of this craft. Pottery became my sanctuary, a place where I could escape and find solace behind a spinning wheel.
But as life evolved, so did my passion for art. It started with the desire to paint my pottery, leading to a deeper fascination with painting itself. Around 1998, I ventured into the world of painting, starting with acrylics and eventually finding my true calling in oils.
I'll never forget my first art teacher who fearlessly placed a paintbrush in my hand and urged me to unleash my creativity. From that moment on, I never looked back. Along the way, I've been fortunate to have two incredible mentors who shaped my artistic journey. Dennis Hilton Lees taught me the importance of bravery and experimentation, while Cyril Coetzee inspired me with his guidance until his relocation.
Since then, I've embarked on countless workshops and retreats, finding a sense of belonging in the South African Society of Artists since 2012. My heart belongs to Plein Air painting—the thrill of capturing nature's beauty firsthand is incomparable. From the mountains of Franschhoek to the mesmerizing waves of the sea, I find endless inspiration in the landscapes that surround me.
Although I miss the camaraderie of painting alongside fellow artists, most of my work now takes place in the solitude of my studio. Yet, even in isolation, I find joy in the play of colours, often mixing my own to achieve the perfect shade. And while I cherish realism, I've also explored the realm of abstract art, finding freedom in its looseness and spontaneity.
As I continue to evolve as an artist, one thing remains constant—my love for the creative process and the endless possibilities it holds. Here's to embracing the journey, one brushstroke at a time
